Staying Safe in the Summer Heat
Don't Take a Vacation on Safety!
It's even more important in the heat and humidity of summer.
Quick, what's the first thing you think about when the word 'summer' gets thrown around? Is it vacations on a tropical beach, a break from the hustle of getting everyone out the door on time, safety? Outside the usual sunblock, hats and sunglasses summertime safety might be something you associate more with fun in the sun. But much like many of us, safety doesn't take a break during the summer.
We can't blame you if you're in vacation mode once July 1st rolls around. It's summertime after all, a chance to get out there and enjoy nature, take vacations to beautiful beaches or stay home and work on your projects and craft. We hope you're taking some time to enjoy the season, but even if you're summer plans involve working, you should keep these safety tips in mind when working in this summer heat!
Hydrate to Keep Yourself Cool, and Focused!
Dehydration is a scary thing, and it can happen faster than you think when it's hot and humid outside. Bring a bottle of water with you (bonus points if it's insulated so your drink stays cool), and keep it within reach. Even in an air conditioned workshop, dehydration can sneak up on you. Remembering to stay hydrated is important even if your workshop is as chilly as the North Pole, after all you're more focused when you're hydrated!
Dress for the Season
We've all been there, walking out of a nice air conditioned house to only have the summer heat hit you square in the chest like a cannonball. Not only does having tight fitting clothes, or long sleeves, make the sweat all the more obvious, it's not comfortable or conducive to staying cool. Wear loose fitting clothing is just one step to a battle of summer safety, but it's huge in making sure your comfortable and worrying about your project in front of you instead of how the shirt keeps sticking to your back.
Be Mindful of Your Workspace!
Workshops come in all different shapes and sizes, from the air conditioned warehouse to the humble garage. Your ventilation and air conditioning is probably just as varied as the type of space you're working in! That's why it's important to be mindful of ventilation, and of course that you're working in a cool area. If you can't work in a cool spot, try to move the times you work on your projects so you're not working during the hottest parts of the day, and stick to the shade as much as possible.
Take Frequent Breaks
Last but not least on this short (and certainly not all-encompassing) safety list, is a reminder to take breaks! Listen to what your body is telling you! Take the moment to rest, rehydrate and most importantly, cool down a bit!
As we all know, safety isn't just for summertime, it's something we have to be mindful of year round! With all the vacation vibes that come with the season, a little reminder goes a long way. So in between having fun in the sun and working on your projects, just remember to stay safe!
