Preparing Your Workshop for Winter

Preparing Your Workshop for Winter

Even though November is still a fall month, it's still important to start preparing for the upcoming winter. The mild November weather is the best chance to start preparing your workshop for the cold weather just on the horizon. By taking a few simple steps, you can ensure that your tools and equipment are ready to handle the winter months.

Here are a few tips to help keep you productive in your workshop even in the winter months:

  • Store your tools properly: Life is a little easier when you get your tools to work exactly how they should. If you live in a colder climate, make sure you're storing your tools in a warm, dry place and that they are not wet or dirty to keep them from rusting. Even if the winter is more on the mild side in your neck of the woods, properly storing and cleaning your tools isn't something to ignore!
  • Insulate your workshop: Protect you, your tools, and your equipment by ensuring your space is properly insulated from the outside elements! Staying insulated and away from the outside elements will help keep you focused on your work instead of the cold, or various weather that winter might throw your way. It's a win-win - staying warm and productive!
  • Dress in layers: Here in southeastern Minnesota, dressing in layers during late fall and winter is just a way of life. Those that aren't used to the temperamental temperature swings of the upper Midwest might think that dressing in layers is overkill (especially if your shop is insulated!). But trust us, it's not. The last thing you want is wet clothes and that counts for sweat too! So pack on an extra flannel, or wear a t-shirt under your sweater something that can easily be removed to help cool you down - and be put back on to warm you up again!
  • Take breaks: If your workshop isn't insulated and you live in a spot where that winter chill is especially biting, be sure to take plenty of breaks to get indoors and warm back up!
